Mr Joe Kinal

Qualifications

  • BSc (Hons), School of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Murdoch University, 1986.
Honours thesis: "Perching and throughflow in a laterite profile in relation to the impact of Phytophthora cinnamomi in the northern jarrah forest."

  • MSc, School of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Murdoch University, 1993.
Masters thesis: "Soil temperature in the northern jarrah forest in relation to plant and litter and cover and implications for the periods and depths at which temperatures permit Phytophthora cinnamomi activity."

Profile

I am an Acting Research Scientist in the Forests and Tree Crops Group, currently conducting studies on jarrah forest hydrology and water relations of Eucalyptus globulus (blue-gum).

Previously I have given technical support to research on the environmental factors affecting the development of disease by Phytophthora cinnamomi in the jarrah forest (jarrah dieback), and on the water relations of Eucalyptus globulus (blue-gum) and Pinus radiata and P. pinaster plantations.

Research Interests

Data loggers, dieback, groundwater, hydrology, jarrah silviculture, salinity, soil temperature

Current Science Projects

  • Hydrological changes to stream quality following timber harvesting in jarrah forest in the intermediate rainfall zone.
  • Establish silvicultural options to achieve a balance between drought risk and productivity in Eucalyptus globulus plantations.
