Postdoctoral Research Position (Fauna ecology)

Project Details: We seek a postdoctoral researcher with a fauna ecological background to work on the ‘Restoring Biodiversity Values’ research program of this Western Australian Government-funded State Centre of Excellence.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will be based at Murdoch University and will be primarily involved with the fauna and forest/woodland health program of the Centre. Appropriate disciplinary backgrounds for the current post could include (but would not be limited to) zoology, wildlife ecology, ecological modelling, forestry, or biology. Experience with (and the ability to undertake) field-based research would be viewed favourably. Some background or interest in environmental restoration would also be of benefit. The suitable candidate will have experience in research project management, and should have a demonstrated track record of publication in academic journals in their field of expertise, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.

The successful candidate will coordinate and carry out field work assessing ecosystem processes operating in various Eucalypt forests/woodlands, engaging with community, landcare groups and regulatory bodies to assist in the management of ecosystems, presentation of research findings, and supervision of research students. They will also assist with research design, quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, and the preparation of manuscripts for publication in high-quality academic journals.

Upcoming postdoc position: Ecophysiology of Eucalypt Decline Phenomena

Project Details: A 3-year Postdoctoral position will soon be offered at the University of Western Australia, as part of the Centre of Excellence.  The successful applicant for the position must have a PhD and research experience in a relevant field of plant biology.

The southwest of Western Australia has experienced a significant decrease in rainfall over the past three decades, a trend that is predicted to continue. At the same time, several of the eucalypt species of the woodlands and forests in this region have started to show health problems. The Research Associate that we seek to employ will contribute to the aims of the Centre of Excellence by investigating if climate-induced environmental stress is implicated in the eucalypt decline phenomena, and by studying possible links between environmental stress and the incidence of pest and disease. This research will target a number of eucalypt species and include monitoring as well as experimental approaches. There will be close collaboration with other researchers in the Centre, including plant pathologists, ecologists, modellers and social scientists, at the University of Western Australia, Murdoch University and other associated institutions.
